Goal

To get a thorough understanding of how the measurements work, what the limitations are etc.

To make the damn thing work under linux.

Idea: To make a low level hardware interface program, either directly or through a microcontroller. Write the UI in javascript, run the web app in kiosk mode on an embedded system.
